It is not AI literacy, which is knowing how AI works. It is not AI strategy, which is knowing where to deploy AI. It is the governance discipline that sits above both, and it did not exist as a named leadership discipline five years ago.
Why does this discipline exist now?
Because the workforce has changed. AI agents do not just assist human workers. They work alongside them, execute tasks autonomously, make decisions within defined parameters, and interact with customers without a human in every loop. The leader who manages a team today is not managing humans who use tools. They are governing a mixed workforce, and the governance model for that workforce has not yet been standardised or widely understood. Most organisations are already deploying AI agents. Very few have designed the governance architecture that determines what is autonomous and what requires human judgment.
What does orchestration failure look like?
In every documented orchestration failure, the pattern is the same: the technology executed, and the governance was missing. The failure is never the agent that drifts. It is the absent architecture that should have defined the agent's boundaries, the escalation paths, and the human accountability for outcomes. Orchestration Intelligence is designed in advance, not retrofitted after failure; documented in canonical doctrine, not held in informal convention; and enforced at every stage of every workflow, not reviewed after every incident.
How does it connect to the next layer?
An orchestrated organisation still has to be read commercially. Business Intelligence is the discipline of holding commercial judgment when the numbers move faster than the quarter.
